After silencing the alarm clock, T.J. rolled over in bed. It was a Saturday morning in Angel Grove, and so far things were pretty quiet. No monsters, no baseball practice, no obligations.
Actually, he amended, he always did have one nagging obligation. Not chores, not schoolwork. Rangering. His communicator lay on his bedstand, waiting for him to put it on. He always wore it when he wasn't in bed. Always. It was his link to Alpha and Dimitria, to the rest of the team. Divatox's crew were always eager to pick off a vunerable Ranger, and he didn't intend to let them.
But right now, he wanted the rest. Would he have accepted the powers if he hadn't been so elated about meeting the Power Rangers and being asked to be one of them? Probably. He didn't turn away from someone needing help. It was the philosophy that had made him end up running around Stone County, rescuing the people who would give him and Cassie their powers.
Yeah, he wanted to be a Ranger. He was just amazed at what it did to his life, his time. Everything had to be put on hold the minute his communicator beeped. He was forever on call, no matter the day or time. Divatox seemed not to mind messing up their social lives. Of course, she wanted him and the rest dead.
If he closed his eyes, he could see Tommy hanging over that weird hole with the whirlpool in it, urging him and Cassie to get away. Tommy had almost died, would have died if he and Cassie hadn't gotten to him.
It had confused him at first why they'd chosen to go after the monster instead of rescuing Tommy, but now he knew. They all made sacrifices. Their personal time, their personal lives, even in rare cases, their own lives, had to be given second place to the people of the earth.
Sacrifice. That's what the whole thing was all about, the feature of a Ranger's life that wasn't apparent to the rest of the world. He couldn't tell the truth about where he went sometimes. He couldn't be sure he'd have time to study or complete the project that was due the next day, because Divatox's newest scheme would always interrupt.
This morning was a rare example of what his life would have been like. No monsters, no Dimitria, no Alpha, no running around saving the world. Peace. Just peace. Just for one morning, peace.
