False Life

The professor was too into the paranormal, Lisa decided. He sounded like someone who had read way too much science fiction as a kid. He probably thought things existed that didn't, and wouldn't know things that did if they bit him on the nose.

She wasn't going to bite him on the nose, though. Although she was tempted, sometimes, to point out that having powers wasn't always the fun and games that it was made out to be. Too many people wanting to exploit them, people who had no idea of anything outside Greed and Money.

That's why she was here, under a name she hadn't been born with. With a life she had never lived. At least she was with her mother. Her mother hadn't taken it well, though. That awful day had shaken her, made her less of the stage mother she had been and into something fiercely overprotective. She'd had two boyfriends since they'd moved, and her mother had scared them away.

And she missed the others, too. There could have been something between her and Adam. She was beginning to like Kevin. Heck, she could have even learned to like Megabyte! All taken away because of greedy men and a mother who was afraid they'd come again. She'd stayed away from the contact and built barriers around her mind to appease her mother, and her own fear. Sometimes she could even forget that she wasn't normal.

But not today. _I miss you, Adam,_ she thought.

*It's not too late to come home,* was the reply, a the warm, gentle feeling of Adam's thoughts behind them, and she belatedly realized that she'd telepathed her thought. She raised her shields again to block him out, block the reminders that she knew would never completely end, not as long as she lived.
