"Wake up, Trent," Dr. O said, shaking his shoulder. "Time to get dressed."

Trent groaned. Dr. O had been adamant that Trent was going to stay at his place. Trent wished he could have snuck back to his tent, gotten more of his stuff, but that would have possibly meant revealing that he was living in a tent, which would have made him have to explain why he wasn't living at home, which would have meant explaining his father was Mesogog.

No thanks.

He was going to have to find a way to tapdance around the truth, hide everything, deny everything. Convince his father that he needed to tell the truth about Mesogog, to get the great Anton Mercer to let someone besides Mesogog's allies know that something was terribly, terribly wrong. Because Anton Mercer wasn't going to do that. Anton Mercer just couldn't be weak.

So, Trent lied and he hid and he camped and he pretended everything was all right, because everything and nothing was wrong and if everything went right, his head might burst.

Or maybe it would't, and maybe things would go back to normal. Maybe. Maybe.

He could only hope.
