Urs sat for a moment, letting the sounds and smells of the Raven filter through her senses. She could hear the heartbeats of the mortals that were in the place, who had no idea that they were surrounded by vampires. LaCroix was doing his broadcast, people were drinking their alcohol and blood, and everything was normal.
Her master, Javier Vachon, wasn't here tonight. No doubt he was either alone or with that mortal hanger-on of his, Tracy Vetter. Urs didn't feel either jealous nor angry that the two were together. She just hoped that Tracy wouldn't suddenly find herself turned into a vampire. Javier had been known to do that, had done that to her.
Urs had seen way too much in her life. Indeed, she had seen way too much life, period. She hadn't wanted to live, had indeed wanted to die, and Javier had never really explained why he'd brought her across that day instead of killing her.
Maybe Tracy would want to come across, want to be a vampire. She was so full of life. Maybe that would come across as well. Tracy might crave living a few centuries. Javier might like that. Of course, who knew what her master's tastes were. She and the rest of his fledglings were a rather odd bunch, and he hardly seemed to remember that they were there half the time. Which could be a blessing, of course. She'd seen how tightly some masters controlled their fledglings. LaCroix in particular.
She was glad she wasn't LaCroix's fledgling. Nicholas had so much in common with her, except that he might desire to live as a mortal. She just didn't want to live. She doubted LaCroix would like her very much as a fledgling. He'd be constantly trying to make her live. All she wanted was to die.
At least Javier would let her go her own way. A simple goodbye, pack her belongings, and go. She'd encounter him again someday. She wasn't going to leave now, as she enjoyed being at the Raven, dancing and even upon occasion singing.
She had eternity, unless she gained the courage to kill herself. Might as well keep on doing what she was doing.
