I wrote "Chosen One's Choice" to figure out "Unwanted Wings" better. And now I've rewritten "Unwanted Wings", so "Chosen One's Choice" doesn't match it any more. Bleh.

Something about the Zecters fascinated me; I presume it's because they're semi-sentient. Enough that one could write a story from a Zecter's POV, which I did.

Oh, and this is AU to Kamen Rider Kabuto, departing the series around episode 21 or so.

This is a companion story to Unwanted Wings. It may change title before it's done, I don't know. It spoils both future events (though not the details themselves) and the story "Unwanted Wings".

It had known its Chosen from its first launch.

An erant sensor trace, thre remains of a bond between one of its kind and a former Chosen, had intrigued Gattack Zecter, and so it chose to investigate. Surprisingly, the sensor array in the Chosen remained intact, a sign that the Chosen, not the Zecter, had rejected the bond. Such a thing should not have happened, but it had, and the Zecter knew that this former Chosen had to be a strong warrior in order to do so.

Its Chosen. This one was its Chosen One now. The other Zecter could lay no claim to it.

The Zecter spent some time observing its new host. To its disappointment, the Chosen One was not as much a warrior as previously hoped, but there had to be some quality to it that had caused its previous Zecter to choose it, as well as its ability to reject its first Zecter.

And Gattack Zecter was going to make use of it. It would enhance its host, and they would fight together.

But first it had to bond, and there was every indication that the Chosen One would fight it, reject the Zecter's attempt to bond, just like it had managed before. Since Gattack Zecter had no intention of letting its Chosen have a chance of rejecting the bond, it would have to surprise it and bond before the host had a chance to resist.

However, protocol demanded that it show itself, protocol that it had no choice but to follow. So it did, charitably giving its Chosen One one chance not to reject it, to claim it. But the host didn't, leaving Gattack Zecter no choice but to follow its original plan. It shot a paralyzing bolt at its Chosen, enough to knock its Chosen out and to fry the sensors still remaining in its Chosen's chest. But the Chosen dodged, rolling away from the blast and coming up ready to fight.

Gattack Zecter threw a few more blasts, still trying to incapacitate its Chosen. The battle continued until the Zecter found itself unexpectedly caught and trampled by its Chosen.

Too damaged to pursue its Chosen at the moment, it let its self-repair system kick in. It would have another chance at its Chosen, it just needed to repair, regroup, and study its Chosen some more.

It was immediately apparent that it would have to work on the element of surprise. Its Chosen was not a warrior as such, but was not stupid, either. Gattack Zecter was starting to appreciate its Chosen One's hidden strengths, but they also made it harder to bond.

The Zecter observed its Chosen for a while longer, trying to find its weak point. Much as the Zecter disliked bonding in mid-battle, leaving its host vulnerable, it might eventually have no choice. Best to try to find a moment when its Chosen One was distracted and strike then.

It finally found a prime moment when its Chosen was paying less attention than usual while walking down the street. It rammed itself into its Chosen's back, causing its Chosen to stumble. While its Chosen one regained its balance, it fired its paralyzation ray. Unfortunately, the Chosen dodged the ray once more and ran into an alley, apparently seeking a more advantageous battlefield.

Gattack Zecter made a quick decision. Its element of surprise was lost, and its Chosen One too cunning to surprise again at the moment. It had to do something, lest its host be too wary for the next few days, but it wasn't quite sure what.

And then it remember the other Zecter's sensors. It could at least do that amount of good, remove all traces of its rival's claim. Burn those out, then go away, let the Chosen One relax its guard.

It swept in, noting that its Chosen's back was against the wall. Clearly, the Chosen One was not going to be surprised by that tactic again. So, instead it moderated the strength of its beam, calculating the result required to burn out the sensors without harming its host, and caught its Chosen One with enough surprise that it actually stayed still long enough to do what needed to be done. It surveyed its work for a second, and then prepared to fly away, being only moderately surprised that its Chosen One grabbed it and proceeded to stomp on it again.

Although its Chosen's actions left it unable to fly, or move much, at least it had accomplished something. Its Chosen seemed content to damage it and leave it, and would not expect for it to repair so rapidly, giving it the element of surprise once again. As its Chosen left the alley, Gattack Zecter engaged its self-repair routines.

The only thing that startled it was that its Chosen returned several minutes later and picked it up. For whatever reason, it apparently didn't trust Gattack Zecter to remain quiescent - a good strategy, but if Gattack Zecter's small tank of nanofluids hadn't been damaged, would have left Gattack's Chosen One vulnerable to the bonding process. However, since Gattack Zecter had no ability to bond, it remained still, letting its host think it more damaged than it was.

After a few minutes, Gattack Zecter's Chosen One was depositing it down on a hard, flat surface, and examining it closely. Seemingly satisfied that Gattack Zecter was going nowhere, it left the room, leaving Gattack Zecter to its own devices.

Gattack Zecter regained mobility sometime during the night, enough to explore its Chosen's dwelling and to look for an inconspicuous place to depart. Finding none, it checked on its host, who was quite soundly unconscious and unlikely to wake. It landed gently on its Chosen One's chest, taking care to only place the sensors and not its brand. The sensors, ones belonging to Gattack Zecter this time, would make it easier to monitor its obstinate host, and would not be felt.

It then returned to the precise spot where its host had left it. Its host examined it closely, and then went on to its daily routine. Thanks to the sensors, however, Gattack Zecter had an advantage in monitoring its host.

When its host returned sometime later, Gattack Zecter was fully repaired, with the exception of the needed nanomaterial. Its Chosen One, apparently not pleased at its state of repair, attempted to get a hold of it to further damage it. But instead, it took advantage of the opening in the small dwelling to leave, intending to refurbish its tank and finally complete the bonding.

Its Chosen One let it go.

The Gattack Zecter continued to look for new places in which to surprise its host. The next chance happened at a battlefield, not the Zecter's choice of places to bond, but one it had to consider. After all, where else would its Chosen One be continuously distracted? It would just have to protect its host afterwards.

So, after its host had finished driving a Worm off, and none more were in sight, Gattack Zecter shot it, rendering it unconscious. Satisfied that its host wasn't going anywhere, it swooped down to its host's chest and prepared to bond.

But, as it tried to reach the host's skin at the injection point, it noticed something was wrong. The host was wearing an item of particularly dense clothing over its chest, and pieces of metal right where it needed to start the injection. Gattack Zecter flew up, knowing that it had to find a way around its Chosen's new strategy, but in the meantime, it had to defend its helpless Chosen One.

Which it did until its host regained consciousness and staggered off. It flew away, still trying to find a new tactic to use.

Still trying to find a way around its Chosen One's new tactic of wearing a protective layer over the injection point, Gattack Zecter swooped down on it once more. If Gattack Zecter was lucky, its Chosen One was not wearing the protective layer; if not, well, it would find another place to start the injection. The host would be more uncomfortable if Gattack Zecter had to inject at the neck area, but it would do it if needed.

The Chosen One stood its ground, fearlessly waiting for Gattack Zecter to dare to attack. It responded by rendering its Chosen One unconscious.

Unsurprisingly, the Chosen One was wearing the protective layer, leaving Gattack Zecter no choice. It rose up, preparing to circle to a better location on the neck, when it noticed another human. From the sensor trace, it appeared that this, too, was a former host, one that had been rejected by its Zecter at one point. It kneeled by Gattack Zecter's Chosen One's prone body.

Gattack Zecter prepared to defend its host. It shot at the intruder with a bolt intended to knock it unconscious, but the former host dodged the bolt handily. Instead of fighting Gattack Zecter, however, it tore the top layer of fabric off the host's chest, and then cleared the protective layer off of the injection point. Gattack Zecter held off from attacking the former host, seeing that it was trying to help... and it could easily be dealt with if it tried to use the bonding as a way to destroy Gattack Zecter.

But the former host did no such thing as Gattack Zecter landed at the injection point and did what it had to. The host would be incapacitated for a while due to the changes the nanomachines had to do to its body, but Gattack Zecter would keep it safe. It triggered the sensors and processes on the host's skin to form its crest on its Chosen One's body, marking it as Gattack Zecter's own.

And then it rose, satisfied. Its Chosen One was truly its Chosen One now, and when its host recovered, they would fight Worms together.

That, after all, was what they had both been born to do.
